Dutch Boy toby jug - Gilman circa 1925

Dutch Boy toby jug with lid produced by Gilman of Savacem, Portugal, circa 1925. A Dutch Boy refers to the Little Dutch Boy character, a boy who plugs a dike with his finger, featured in the novel "Hans Brinker", or "The Silver Skates" by Mary Mapes Dodge. He is characterized as a boy dressed in traditional Dutch clothing and wooden shoes with a type of bob haircut featuring straight bangs and hair cut horizontally above the neck. Designed similarly to the Goebel design, this Dutch Boy is holding a pipe in his right hand.
