Dutch Boy toby jug - Germany circa 1910

Dutch Boy toby jug produced in Germany circa 1910 and marked Ges Gesch. A Dutch Boy refers to the Little Dutch Boy character, a boy who plugs a dike with his finger, featured in the novel "Hans Brinker", or "The Silver Skates" by Mary Mapes Dodge. He is characterized as a boy dressed in traditional Dutch clothing and wooden shoes with a type of bob haircut featuring straight bangs and hair cut horizontally above the neck. This is a pair with a Dutch Girl toby jug.
The mark Ges Gesch is short for "Gesetzlich geschuzt" meaning registered in German. Ware marked in this way is commonly referred to as Ges Gesch ware.
