Drunken Sal toby jug pink dress - Davenport circa 1840

Drunken Sal toby jug in pink dress produced by Davenport 1840. Wearing a tattered red 18th century dress white mob cap and large brimmed hat Drunken Sal personifies the gin drinking women of the day. She is a slutish, leering woman sitting on a tree stump with a branch forming the handle. She is holding a glass in her left hand and clay pipe in her right with smoke wafting from the bowl. The impressed Davenport mark dates this piece to the late 1830s or early 1840s.
