Door Mat Maker toby jug - Franklin Porcelain 1980

Door Mat Maker toby jug designed by Peter Jackson and produced by Franklin Porcelain of London, England, in 1980 limited edition and sold on a subscription basis. The Door Mat Maker sells hand made plain yet functional door mats to help keep dirt out of people's homes. Very common in Victorian London, street vendors sold merchandise or services that were easily transported; the term is synonymous with costermonger or peddler. Street vendors often advertised by loud street cries or chants, and bantered with customers, to attract attention and enhance sales. This Door Mat Maker cries out, "Sixpence a door mat!" This is one of twelve toby jugs in the Cries of London Series.
