David Copperfield toby jug produced by Wood & Sons of Burslem, England, in a 1981 limited edition for Franklin Porcelain of London and sold on a subscription basis. David Copperfield is the main character and narrator of the novel modeled after Dickens' life, "David Copperfield". He begins life with his widowed mother and their maid, Peggoty. When his mother marries Mr. Murdstone, his life becomes miserable. He is sent to Creakle's school where he meets Steerforth and Traddles. After the death of his mother, he goes to work at Murdstone and Grinby and is lodged with the Micawbers. David runs away to live with his aunt, Betsy Trotwood, in Dover. He later marries his employer Spenlow's daughter, Dora. When Dora dies, David marries his longtime friend, Agnes Wickfield. David, like Dickens, becomes a successful author.
