Darby & Joan double sided character jug produced in Rockingham finish by Montrose Potteries of Angus, Scotland, circa 1960. Darby and Joan have become synonymous with a married couple celebrated for their mutual attachment or a happily married couple who lead a placid, uneventful life or a loving, old-fashioned and virtuous couple. Darby and his wife Joan were first mentioned in print in a poem published in The Gentleman's Magazine by Henry Woodfall whose original title was The Joys of Love never forgot. A Song.
