Cyrano de Bergerac jug produced by Royal Dux of Duchcov, Czechoslovakia, circa 1915. Savinien de Cyrano de Bergerac (1619-1655) was a French author and soldier probably best known as a frustrated lover in the very romantic, but fictional play of the same name by Edmond Rostand. In Rostand's play, Cyrano is cursed with an enormous, bulbous, blossoming beak of a nose. To compensate for his belief that no woman could ever love him, he made himself renowned for his bravery and the charm of his verse. Roxanne, his beautiful and wealthy cousin, imagines herself in love with the handsome Christian de Neuvilette and wants Cyrano to bring them together. Putting aside his own love for her, Cyrano's eloquence in the many letters signed in Christian's name brings about the marriage of Christian and Roxanne. Many years later Roxanne realizes that Cyrano was the writer of the love letters and that through all the years it has been Cyrano that she actually loved. A feather forms the handle of the jug.
