Crybaby character jug in a brown colorway designed by Tony Sarg and produced by Stangl Pottery of Flemington, New Jersey, circa 1965. A crybaby is a person, especially a child, who cries readily for very little reason, or a person who complains too much, usually in a whining manner. Crybaby comes with a removeable round cap that he wears out on the town, and when removed, serves as an ashtray. The Crybaby jug was originally called Depression, but the name was changed in the 1940s. Known to Stangl collectors as stoby jugs (Stangl toby jugs), full colorways were original production in the 1930s to 1950s. Solid colorways were produced in the 1960s and 1970s.
