Confucius character jug in a flambé finish modeled by Robert I. Tabbenor and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, in a 1995 limited edition of 1,500. Confucius (551-479 B.C.) was a Chinese sage who long after his death became the dominant Chinese philosopher, both morally and politically. Distressed by the constant warfare between the Chinese states and the tyranny of the rulers, he urged a system of morality and statecraft that would preserve peace and provide the people with a stable and just government. The Confucian tradition became so broad that Scholar or Literatus became all but synonymous with Confucian. As one of the Three Ways, together with Taoism and Buddhism, Confucianism also grew into one of the traditional religions of the Han Chinese. A yin and yang symbol and "The Analects" book of teachings form the handle of this jug.
