Collier Toby jug - Pearlware circa 1780

Collier toby jug made in Staffordshire circa 1780. A Collier is a traditional coal miner. The Collier Toby is an Ordinary Toby jug with blackened face and hands which were the result of working in the mines all day. The Pearlware finish refers to the final clear glazing that contained cobalt and gave a slight blue coloring to glaze that tended to pool between fingers and in creases in the face.
