Coachman toby jug - Japan circa 1975

Coachman toby jug produced in Japan circa 1975. A coachman is an employee who drives a coach or carriage, a horse-drawn vehicle designed for the conveyance of passengers. A coachman has also been called a coachee, coachy, whip, or hackman. The coachman's first concern is to remain in full control of the horses and another employee, traditionally a footman, would accompany the coach to handle any circumstances beyond the coachman's control. Note the buggy whip in the coachman's right hand. This is a copy of the Coachman toby jug produced by Wedgwood & Co. The smaller Coachman jugs stand 3 1/4" and 3" tall respectively.
