Cleopatra face pot red - Kevin Francis circa 2003

Cleopatra face pot in a red colorway produced by Kevin Francis Ceramics of Stoke-on-Trent, England, circa 2003. Cleopatra VII Thea Philopator (70 BC-30 BC) was Queen of the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt from 51 to 30 BC, and its last active ruler. A member of the Ptolemaic dynasty, she was a descendant of its founder Ptolemy I Soter, a Macedonian Greek general and companion of Alexander the Great. After the death of Cleopatra, Egypt became a province of the Roman Empire, marking the end of the last Hellenistic period state in the Mediterranean and of the age that had lasted since the reign of Alexander (336-323 BC). Her first language was Koine Greek and she is the only known Ptolemaic ruler to learn the Egyptian language. "Give me my robe, put on my crown; I have / Immortal longings in me" is the beginning of Cleopatra's final speech in Shakespeare's tragedy "Antony and Cleopatra" as well as her face pot quote. Her immortal longings are her longings for immortality, her desire to leave behind the mortal world and enter the next.
