Clark Gable character jug version 1 prototype designed by Eric Griffiths and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, in 1989 for UK International Ceramics for a proposed Great Film Stars Collection. The MGM superstar, Clark Gable (1901-1960), began life in Cadiz, Ohio, the son of an oil driller. Working alongside his father until he was twenty-one, the young Gable joined a traveling troupe to fulfill his acting dreams. After a shaky start, the future heartthrob was finally signed in 1931 to a Hollywood contract by MGM, where he played a succession of supporting roles, often as a gangster. Gable disliked this typecasting and subsequently was given the lead part as a reporter in Frank Capra’s "It Happened One Night", a role that won him an Academy Award. His most important role, however, was as Rhett Butler in one of the biggest box office hits of all time, "Gone With the Wind", as depicted in this jug. Starring opposite Vivien Leigh as Scarlett O’Hara, Gable utters one of cinema’s most quoted lines that is incorporated in the backstamp of this jug, “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.” The steamy actor’s post-WWII career was less successful, but Clark never lost his fan support that earned him the title “King of Hollywood.” For many years a leading box office attraction, the “King” made more than sixty-five films. He died shortly after finishing his final film, "The Misfits". A "Gone With The Wind" filmstrip forms the handle of the jug.
