Chelsea Pensioner character jug in a red jacket trial colorway modeled by Stanley J. Taylor and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, in 1989. Chelsea Pensioner is the popular name given inhabitants of the Royal Hospital, Chelsea, London. Although long rumored that Nell Gwynne, mistress of Charles II, suggested its foundation, credit goes properly to the Paymaster General of the Armed Forces who recommended its creation as a home for disabled soldiers. Founded by Charles II in 1682, the hospital was opened in 1692 and is maintained as a home for the "boys of the old brigade," retired veterans of numerous campaigns, who are often seen out in the grounds and on ceremonial occasions proudly wearing their bright red uniforms and glittering medals. The handle of the jug displays the Pensioner's well deserved campaign medals.
