Chantecler toothpick holder produced by Schafer & Vater of Rudolstadt, Germany, circa 1925. The Chantecler is the main character from Edmond Rostand's 1910 play of the same name. Rostand, a French poet and dramatist, wrote the four act play centered on the themes of idealism and spiritual sincerity. All of the characters are barnyard animals with Chantecler being the main protagonist. In the play's initial run Chantecler was played by French stage actor Lucien Guitry.
