Chantecler toby jug - Royal Bayreuth circa 1920

Chantecler toby jug produced by Royal Tettau Porcelain Factory of Bavaria, Germany, circa 1920 using its Royal Bayreuth tradename. The Chantecler is the main character from Edmond Rostand's 1910 play of the same name. Rostand, a French poet and dramatist, wrote the four act play centered on the themes of idealism and spiritual sincerity. All of the characters are barnyard animals with Chantecler being the main protagonist. In the play's initial run Chantecler was played by French stage actor Lucien Guitry. The Chantecler's wings form the handle of the jug.
