Cavalier toby jug red - Sterling Pottery circa 1950

Cavalier toby jug wearing a red jacket produced by Sterling Pottery of Fenton, England, circa 1950 after being purchased by Ridgway in 1950. In days of old, a Cavalier signified a gentleman, a horseman and a knight. There have been many famous cavaliers throughout history; for example, the Laughing Cavalier was the name given to an unknown gallant portrayed by the Dutch painter Frans Hals. The term, however, is collectively associated with the followers of King Charles I. Pitted against the Puritan Roundheads, the Cavaliers waged a fierce and lengthy contest until the Roundheads were finally vanquished in the seventeenth century English Civil War. When the Restoration of the monarchy was affected in 1660, the first parliament of Charles II took its name from the Royalist majority and was called the Cavalier Parliament.
