Cavalier character jug produced by Koessinger of Schierling, Germany, in a 1986 limited edition for the Holzelfingen hiking club, or Wanderfreunde, as an award to members of the club. In days of old, a Cavalier signified a gentleman, a horseman and a knight. There have been many famous cavaliers throughout history; for example the Laughing Cavalier was the name given to an unknown gallant portrayed by the Dutch painter Frans Hals. The term, however, is collectively associated with the followers of King Charles I. Pitted against the Puritan Roundheads, the Cavaliers waged a fierce and lengthy contest until the Roundheads were finally vanquished in the seventeenth century English Civil War. When the Restoration of the monarchy was effected in 1660, the first parliament of Charles II took its name from the Royalist majority and was called the Cavalier Parliament. This jug is based on Magrou and Capodimonte character jugs in larger sizes.
