Captain Henry Morgan toby jug - Kevin Francis Ceramics 1994

Captain Henry Morgan toby jug modeled by Andy Moss and produced by Kevin Francis Ceramics of Stoke-on-Trent, England, in a 1994 limited edition of 250 as the 1994 Toby Jug of the Year. Henry Morgan (1635-1688) was a privateer who made a name in the Caribbean as a leader of buccaneers and roughnecks. In 1666 Morgan was aboard a ship that seized the island of New Providence. When the ship's captain was killed, the buccaneers chose Morgan as their admiral. Under commission from the governor of Jamaica, he pursued the Spanish, ravaged the coast of Cuba, captured and sacked Puerto Principe, and with 1,400 men defeated a much larger force than his own in taking the city of Panama on January 18, 1671. The fame of this brilliant exploit was tarnished by the habitual cruelty of Morgan's crew. The politics of the time were complex, however, and despite having previously received royal support for his actions, Morgan was arrested and conducted to England. His fortunes turned again, and in 1674 Morgan was knighted by King Charles II and made Lieutenant Governor of Jamaica, where he remained until his death. A flintlock pistol forms the handle of the jug.
