American Toby Jug Museum 

Black Friar 3/4 body toby jug produced by Dartmouth Pottery of Devon, England, circa 1955. A friar is a member of one of the mendicant orders founded in the twelfth or thirteenth century; the term distinguishes the mendicants' itinerant apostolic character, exercised broadly under the jurisdiction of a superior general, from the older monastic orders' allegiance to a single monastery formalized by their vow of stability. A friar may be in holy orders or be a brother. The most significant orders of friars are the Dominicans, Franciscans, Augustinians, and Carmelites. This Black Friar is and advertising piece for Black Friar Distillery and can be found with Black Friar Gin or Black Friar Distillery on the front. It is a puzzle jug and is known in both a full colorway as shown here, or an all-over brown glaze.
