Black Dog character jug - J. Fryer Limited circa 1970

Black Dog character jug produced by J. Fryer Limited of Tunstall, England, circa 1970 using its Oldcourt Ware tradename. Black Dog is a fictional character appearing in Robert Louis Stevenson's 1883 novel "Treasure Island" Black Dog is the pale pirate, missing two fingers, who confronts Billy Bones at the Admiral Benbow Inn. Jim also sees Black Dog talking to Tom Morgan at Long John Silver's bar, the Spy-Glass.
Luckily for Long John Silver, he's quick enough to pretend to throw Black Dog out of the bar in outrage for being a pirate, thus soothing Jim's suspicion that Long John Silver might also be an acquaintance of Black Dog. Black Dog's long braided pony tail forms the handle of the jug.
