Bill Sykes pepper shaker - Artone Pottery circa 1960

Bill Sykes pepper shaker produced by Artone Pottery of Burslem, England, circa 1960. Bill Sykes, the brutal thug and murderer from Charles Dickens' novel "Oliver Twist", is a professional thief who sells his ill-gotten gain to Fagin to make his living. Violent and aggressive, he brings Oliver Twist into various nefarious schemes with Fagin's urging. Approximately thirty-five years old, he does have a softer side, maintaining a relationship with Nancy, although he does not love her very much. His life ends as brutally as he lived it, for when the police are moving to arrest him, he falls down from the roof of a house and is killed. This is a pair with the Tony Weller salt shaker.
