Betsy Trotwood candle snuffer - Beswick circa 1983

Betsy Trotwood candle snuffer produced by Beswick of Longton, England, circa 1983 for the Dickens House Museum. In Charles Dickens' novel, "David Copperfield", Betsy Trotwood is the great aunt of the principle character, David Copperfield. She is an eccentric old lady who initially is bitterly disappointed because David is a nephew instead of a niece, and for a long time has nothing to do with him. Upon seeking her out, David finds her kind-hearted in spite of her harsh exterior. She proves to be the best of friends to the lonely boy. Betsy's frequent allusions to the niece she might have had, whom she calls David's "sister," are amusing. Betsy Trotwood is also the caretaker for the villainous Uriah Heep.
