Betsy Prigg toby jug - Sitzendorfer circa 1920

Betsy Prigg toby jug produced by Sitzendorfer Porzellanmanufaktur in Thuringa, Germany, circa 1920. Betsy Prigg is a midwife who appears in Charles Dickens' novel "Martin Chuzzlewit". She is described as a drunken, slovenly, and unscrupulous woman who is willing to do anything for money. Her character is often compared to that of Sarah Gamp, another nurse character from Dickens' works. Note the gold anchor on the rear of the jug below the handle.
