Beast character jug produced in Indonesia for Applause of Woodland Hills, California, in 1996. "Beauty and the Beast" is a fairy tale written by the French novelist Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve and published in 1740. The story begins with a merchant who is setting out on a journey to restore his fortune offers to bring gifts for his daughters. While the elder daughters make extravagant requests, the youngest, Beauty, asks only for a rose. On his way home the merchant takes refuge in an enchanted castle where he plucks a rose in the garden and his unseen host appears: a terrifying beast. The Beast spares the merchant's life when he learns the rose is a gift. He offers to free the merchant if one of his daughters agrees to live in the castle. The merchant accepts, and upon his return Beauty insists it is her duty to take her father's place. The Beast is kind and generous toward Beauty, but every night when he asks her to marry him she refuses. When the Beast gives Beauty two months to visit her family, they pressure her not to return. In a dream the Fairy warns her that the Beast is dying of a broken heart. Beauty hurries back, revives him and confesses her love. The next evening when the Beast proposes, Beauty accepts. That night he falls into an enchanted sleep. In the morning, he has transformed into the man from her dreams. The Beast's tail forms the handle of the jug.
