Beaky character jug - Staffordshire Fine Ceramics circa 1975

Beaky character jug produced by Staffordshire Fine Ceramics of Tunstall, England, circa 1975. Beaky is a lawyer, someone who, through many years of challenging education and the successful passing of a professional exam, is licensed to practice the law. This learned lawyer pleads a knowledgeable and convincing case to the jury. Dressed for court in a horsehair wig, cravat and robes, he skillfully develops his argument, his tone one minute accusing and the next cajoling as he persuades his audience to the justness of his case. In Britain, the dress of lawyers has not changed since the days of Queen Anne, illustrating the depth and tradition of their profession. This fellow appears genial enough, having probably just won a tricky case on some obscure point of law. A feather quill forms the handle of the jug.
