Bacchus character jug produced by Simon Peter Gerz of Rhineland, Germany, circa 1950. Bacchus is the Roman god of wine and intoxication. Around 200 BCE the Bacchanalia annual festival was held in his honor featuring excessive drinking orgies and criminal behavior. A grape vine forms the handle of the jug.
