Army Reservist toby jug - Onnaing circa 1915

Army Reservist majolica toby jug produced by Onnaing of Onnaing, France, circa 1915, model number 752. An infantryman reservist in the French Army he is shown sitting astride a barrel and holding a glass of ale. The front of the barrel reads "VIVE LA REDUCTION DES PERIODES" translated as Reduce the Period of Military Service. This toby jug is a political statement objecting to France's 1913 Three Year Law that extended the term of French military service to three years. Several colorways of this jug are known. The rare blue colorway is in honor of the Belgium army.
