Algy character jug produced by Shaw & Sons of Tunstall, England, circa 1960 using its Burlington Ware tradename. From the French, the name Algy means one with whiskers or bearded. In Norman times, when most men were clean-shaven, this nickname was given two mustache-wearing companions of William the Conqueror. Wearing his favorite top hat, and with a monocle in his right eye and an umbrella for the handle, Algy is ready for a night on the town with friends.
