Air Raid Precaution Warden character jug designed by Caroline Dadd and modeled by Zoe (Valerie) Annand, and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, in a 2004 limited edition of 250. During the Second World War all able-bodied British men were conscripted into the armed forces, creating a shortage of manpower on the domestic front. This gap was ably filled by those too young, too old, deferred from service on medical grounds, or those in reserve occupations. Among them was the Air Raid Precaution Warden who shepherded the public into shelters during air raids, enforced the blackout restrictions at night time and watched for incendiary bombs. The Air Raid Precaution Warden’s cry of “Put that light out!” became a familiar phrase in London in the 1940s. A bell and banner form the handle of the jug.
