Admiral Lord Nelson toby jug stoneware - Royal Doulton circa 1905

Admiral Lord Nelson 3/4 body stoneware toby jug produced by Royal Doulton of Lambeth, England, circa 1905. Viscount Horatio Nelson (1788-1805) was Great Britain's greatest admiral and naval hero. He defeated the combined French and Spanish Fleets at Trafalgar on the coast of Spain in the greatest naval victory in British history. His triumph broke the naval power of France and established Great Britain's rule of the seas for the rest of the nineteenth century. Falling in love with the sea early in life, Nelson was a veteran of many naval wars. He lost an eye at the Battle of Calvi, an arm at the Battle of the Nile and his life at Trafalgar, but not before knowing he was victorious. His last words were, "Thank God I have done my duty," which he had expected of every man under his command. The large re-issued jug produced circa 1905 were issued to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar and carry an inscription around the base of words spoken by Nelson before the Battle of Trafalgar, "England expects every man to do his duty." Nelson's long hair forms the handle of the jug.
