Abraham Whipple toby jug - Big Brook Studio circa 1965

Abraham Whipple toby jug produced by Grace Apgar, the founder of the Big Brook Studio Pottery of Marlboro, New Jersey, circa 1965. Captain Abraham Whipple was a Rhode Island hero for his involvement in the Gaspee Affair. Whipple lead a group who rowed out to the grounded English sloop Gaspee. They sent the sailors to shore and torched the sloop. The Gaspee's Captain sent a note to Whipple saying he would be hung. Whipple replied "Sir, always catch a man before you hang him." This jug depicts Whipple wearing a naval officer's uniform and holding his cards close to his vest, as he is reported to have done in real life.
